Hi, I’m Xiao

I developed my independent personality and a strong sense of responsibility very early in life. Born in China, I was brought up in a traditional Chinese family with parents who had very high expectations of me. After coming to the United States, the demands on me intensified. My family relied on me to aid with the everyday language and cultural challenges we faced entering a foreign country. I could still hear the piercing words of my father when I started attending elementary school. He said, “I can’t provide any academic help. You’re on your own from now on.” Being on my own in a new environment wasn’t scary for me. Instead, the experience heightened my awareness of the world and the people around me. It has given me the ability to adapt quickly and thrive under pressure.
